The command is used on the interface that receives ICMP packets. ICMP redirection packets are a type of ICMP control packets. When the device detects that a host uses a non-optimal route, it sends an ICMP redirection packet to the host, requesting the host to change the route. The device also sends an ICMP redirection packet to the destination.

ICMP type 5, Redirect - Network Sorcery ICMP Redirect is a mechanism for routers to convey routing information to hosts. Routers use other mechanisms to learn routing information, and therefore have no reason to obey redirects. Believing a redirect which contradicted the router's other information would likely create routing loops. ICMP redirects drop - Check Point ICMP redirect messages are used by routers to notify the hosts on the data link that a better route is available for a particular destination. ICMP redirect packets are not allowed by default (refer to sk22180).

ICMP - Redirect Message Analysis - Firewall.cx Putting it simply (before we have a look at the example) the ICMP - Redirect message occurs when a host sends a datagram (or packet) to its gateway (destination of this datagram is a different network), which in turn forwards the same datagram to the next gateway (next hop) and this second gateway is on the same network as the host.
